This book chronicles the lives, deaths, and thoughts of the people of the Isle of Man through the 18th and 19th centuries, as recorded on the headstones and within the churches of the island's millennia-old parish system. The book's collection of over 400 inscriptions are transcribed almost exactly as they appear, preserving their original spelling, language, and punctuation, and provide an evocative, moving, and historically valuable window into the Manx way of life across the generations. A rich historical and literary document, the book positions its subject matter within the broader political, social, and cultural history of the Isle of Man and its unique relationship with the larger British story, and the deep Celtic roots of its people, language, and traditions. The headstone inscriptions recorded here include a range of verse, from traditional epitaphs to unique and moving eulogies, reflecting the many ways that we remember, celebrate, and mourn our dead. Through these inscriptions, the author lays bare the profound and universal human themes of life, death, and remembrance. The book's insights into the Manx peoples' lives, values, and beliefs make it a significant contribution to the study of both the Isle of Man and of humanity more broadly, and will be of value to scholars and general readers alike. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

The importance of monuments and inscriptions in the illustration of local history cannot be too strongly maintained ; but for these, how many persons and events worthy of remembrance would have remained unknown. There are few monuments in the Isle of Man with any pretension to artistic taste. The inscriptions recorded by Mr. Feltham are in many instances only a bare memorial of name, date, and age, yet these alone will be found useful to the future historian in recording the genealogy of families, as well as a record of the patronymics of the country. Mr. Feltham, during his stay in the Island, resided in Ramsey, and commenced his work in the parish of Maughold proceeding on his way southward ; it has been thought desirable to commence in the regular order in which the various parishes stand on the records. The inscriptions appear to be taken in the order as they lie in the graveyard, by which the names of the various families are in many instances brought in close proximity. The usual custom of adding the wife's surname tends materially to connect links by which many Manx families are united.
