Very Good in Worn Dustjacket With Large Piece Missing from the Bottom Spine. Edited by Phyllis B. Eveleth. Translated from the Portuguese by Jacqueline D. Skiles, A. Brunel, and Arthur Rothwell. 489 pages. hard…cover. keywords: Latin America Brazil History Race. DESCRIPTION - This is a two-part study examining the status of the Negro in Brazilian society and offering principal conclusions reached concerning the interaction between Negroes and Whites in the city of São Paulo. The author focuses his sociological investigation on the developments in São Paulo because it experienced the most rapid growth of any Brazilian city and is the only city with the resources needed to expand the class society. The first part of the study is historical, presenting the condition of the Negro and the mulatto after slavery. The author shows how their lack of preparation and limitations stemming from deeply rooted negative attitudes resulted in racial prejudice that forced them into a marginal position in the social order. In the second part of the study, Professor Fernandes makes an extensive survey of the Negro in contemporary society. Carefully gathered data and revealing personal histories both indicate that while there has been some improvement in the status of the Negro, he has not been integrated into the social order. This, the author states, is a major threat to the stability of Brazilian democracy. 'We cannot continue without serious injustice to keep the Negro at the margin of the development of a civilization he helped to create.' This is one in a series of translations of major Latin American scholarly works, sponsored by the Institute of Latin American Studies of Columbia University. inventory #3317 Very Good in Worn Dustjacket With Large Piece Missing from the Bottom Spine.
