Add to basketHard Cover. Condition: Good. M. DCXVI. [1616] In 8.º de 14x9 cm. In octavo. 14 × 9 cm. 240 folios. Contemporary parchment binding with a handwritten title on the spine. The work Teagnes and Claricleia, or The Ethiopian Story as it is also known, is a novel written by Heliodorus of Hemessa, a Greek writer of the Hellenistic period. In 1526, a manuscript of the work was discovered in the Library of Buda, and it was first published in 1534 in the city of Basel. This was soon followed by translations into French (1547), Latin (1551), Italian (1556) and English (1569). A Byzantine romance recounting the trials of Teágenes and Caricleia, a couple who face shipwrecks, abductions and dangers in the Mediterranean in order to preserve their love. After being captured and taken to Ethiopia, Caricleia?s true identity is revealed, preventing her sacrifice and leading to a happy ending. The work, which begins in medias res with a shipwreck scene, uses flashbacks to develop the suspenseful plot. The climax takes place in Egypt, where the heroine is recognised by her mother, culminating in the lovers? marriage. Highly notable for its narrative structure and style, it exerted a strong and lasting influence on European literature. Some of the greatest writers influenced by this work were Torquato Tasso in Jerusalem Delivered and Miguel de Cervantes in his novel Persiles and Sigismunda . Fernando de Mena (c. 1520?1585) was a distinguished Spanish physician, humanist and translator of the Renaissance period. Born in Socuéllamos, he obtained his bachelor?s and doctoral degrees in medicine from the prestigious University of Alcalá, where he later became an influential professor of medicine. His recognised expertise and extensive academic output on the works of Galen earned him, in 1560, the appointment as personal physician to King Philip II of Spain. In addition to his legacy in medicine and the publication of seminal scientific texts, Mena also distinguished himself in humanist circles for his celebrated translation into Castilian of Heliodorus?s literary work Teágenes and Caricleia .
