Front wrapper has pictorial design with several images within compartments of ladder-like structures surrounding an image of an ancient temple. Back of frontispiece and publisher's advertisement on rear wrapper each lists 6 titles in the series. OCLC 52082135 Date approximate. Illustrated with delightful wood engravings throughout, including frontispiece, titlepage vignette, plus 7 full page illustrations and numerous illustrated tail pieces for chapters. The frontispiece and titlepage illustrstions have been hand-colored. The engraving at p. 41 is signed (in the plate) "Gordon. Sc" likely for John G. Gordon, mid 19th century wood engraver) lived in New York. The engraved illustrations at p. 4 and p. 55 are signed (in the plate) "F. E. W", for Fernando Edwards Worcester. John Fernando Edwards Worcester, wood engraver, was born in 1818 and married Mrs. M. H. Davis in 1842. They lived variously in Damariscotta, Maine, Charlestown and Boston, Massachusetts until 1852, when they migrated to California.
