The frontispiece and titlepage illustrstions have been hand-colored. The engraving at p. 41 is signed (in the plate) "Gordon. Sc" likely for John G. Gordon, mid 19th century wood engraver) lived in New York. The engraved illustrations at p. 4 and p. 55 are signed (in the plate) "F. E. W", for Fernando Edwards Worcester. John Fernando Edwards Worcester, wood engraver, was born in 1818 and married Mrs. M. H. Davis in 1842. They lived variously in Damariscotta, Maine, Charlestown and Boston, Massachusetts until 1852, when they migrated to California.
