Il s'agit d'un extrait stricto sensu (détaché d'un volume des Mémoires de l'Académie des Sciences). Ce texte n'a pas fait l'objet d'un tirage à part. C'est le mémoire le plus célèbre de l'auteur. A PIONEERING MICROSCOPICAL EXPERIMENTS ON LIVER AND KIDNEY STRUCTURES. Ferrein soupçonna "que la substance propre de plusieurs viscères comme le foie, la rate, la partie corticale des reins était composée de quelque genre de vaisseaux blancs" et décida d'examiner attentivement ces tissus à l'aide de "verres lenticulaires" (microscope). Il découvre dans le foie "un aspect d'anneaux ou demi-anneaux, formés en apparence par l'inflexion d'un filet ou vaisseau blanc extrêmement délié, qui sembloit tracer successivement plusieurs figures pareilles". Ferrein donne ensuite une description détaillée et remarquable de la structure des reins. Il décrit notamment les structures rénales auxquelles son nom est toujours attaché ("pyramides de Ferrein"), et les "tuyaux blancs" qui prendront au XIXe siècle le nom de tubes de Henlé. Il n'omet pas de citer les travaux de ses prédécesseurs, en signalant des erreurs et en réfutant certaines idées. Ce mémoire apparait aussi novateur par la forme et étonnement moderne, comportant un paragraphe intitulé "Instruction sur les moyens de vérifier les principaux faits rapportés dans ce mémoire" évoquant la partie "Matériel et Méthode" des publications scientifiques. Ferrein préconise notamment d'utiliser des verres lenticulaires de "six ou sept lignes de foyer". Antoine Ferrein (1693-1769) fut l'un des plus grands anatomistes de son temps. Il fut admis à l'Académie des sciences, devint professeur au Collège royal de France et succéda à Winslow au Jardin-du-Roi. October 1693 zu Frespech in Agenais geboren und starb am 28. Februar 1769 in Paris. Er begann seine Studien bei den Jesuiten in Agen, woselbst er Theologie, Mathematik und Jura trieb. Doch wurde er durch die Lectüre von Borrelli's Werk "De mortu animalium" diesen seinen Bestrebungen untreu gemacht und der Medicin zugeführt, deren ausschliesslichem Studium er in Montpellier sich widmete. 1716 wurde er Baccalaureus und nachdem er in Marseille noch eingehend Chirurgie studirt hatte machte er in Montpellier das Doctorexamen. Im Jahre 1732 wurde er zum Professor der Anatomie in Montpellier vorgeschlagen, da er von der Regierung aber nicht gewählt wurde, so ging er nach Paris, wo er die Stelle des Ober-Feldmedicus der nach Italien ziehenden französischen Armee übernahm. Bis zum Jahre 1735 bekleidete er diesen ärztlichen Posten in dem Heere, um dann nach Paris zurückzukehren. Da aber gerade in Vexin eine heftige Epidemie ausbrach, so verliess er bald wieder Paris, um gegen die Seuche an Ort und Stelle zu wirken. Nach Erlöschen der Epidemie ging er nach Paris zurück, woselbst er 1738 Licentiat der medicinischen Facultät und 1741 Anatom bei der Akademie der Wissenschaften wurde. 1742 wurde er zum Professor der Medizin und Chirurgie an dem königlichen Collegium in Paris ernannt. Von seinen Arbeiten ist besonders ein Handbuch der praktischen Chirurgie und praktischen Medizin zu nennen. In der Augenheilkunde machte er sich besonders bekannt durch einen Aufsatz über Anatomie und Therapie der Thränenorgane, eine Arbeit welche auch von Haller in seinen Dissert. Chirurg.
