Hardback. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. VERY Good, No dust jacket. CLEA! No marks in text, Light wear on cover. Binding is tight and square. xxi, 389, 25 pages : illustrations, portraits, maps (some folded) ; 27 cm. . . . . . A Civil War regimental history compiled by Suzanne Colton Wilson from the letters, diaries, and later recollections of two brothers who served in the unit, Matthias Baldwin Colton and William Francis Colton; J. Ferrell Colton and Antoinette G. Smith edited the volume. The 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry (also called the Anderson Cavalry) was an independent mounted regiment that began service in the East around Antietam and then spent most of the war attached to the Army of the Cumberland, performing scouting, escort, courier, and raid duties. The narrative follows the men through Stones River, the Tullahoma campaign, Chickamauga, the siege and battles around Chattanooga, operations in East Tennessee and Alabama, and the closing 1865 cavalry movements that culminated in the pursuit of Jefferson Davis. The book is richly illustrated with photographs, portraits, drawings, and folding maps and includes a muster roll and index. Civil War bibliographer Allan Nevins called it ?a unique and valuable unit history? too often underrated.? Beyond battle accounts it records everyday cavalry life: enlistment and drill, foraging, prisoner experiences (including Libby Prison), encounters with Southern civilians and Unionists, pay, horses, rumors, voting in the field, and the final chaotic weeks after Appomattox. The result is both a detailed operational record of one of the better Union cavalry regiments and a personal chronicle of two brothers? wartime service from Maryland to Georgia.
