Georges de La Tour (1593-1652) è stato un artista molto attivo e fam…oso (ottenne, nel 1639, il titolo di pittore del Re), ma la sua produzione ci è pervenuta scarsissima: appena una trentina di opere entro un arco lavorativo di quasi quarant'anni. La sua formazione può essere letta chiaramente in chiave romana e caravaggesca. I suoi esordi si pongono al fianco dei protagonisti del naturalismo seicentesco (Gentileschi, Saraceni, Manfredi, Ter Brugghen e altri) gravitanti a Roma nel secondo decennio del secolo. Muovendo da una radicale indagine realistica, la sua pittura mira a organizzare una realtà sconvolgente entro una calcolatissima costruzione formale. Il volume è curato da Pierre Rosenberg, già direttore del Louvre e indiscusso specialista di de la Tour, e comprende un regesto dell'opera del pittore.
