Feynman described the polaron problem as follows: An electron in an ionic crystal polarises the lattice in its neighbourhood. This interaction changes the energy of the electron. Furthermore, when the electron moves the polarisation state must move with it. An electron moving with its accompanying distortion of the lattice has sometimes been called a polaron. In this paper, Feynman uses a variational technique developed using path-integral methods to calculate the polaron's mobility.
