Traduzione di Maria Teresa Franci. Usura da scaffale al piede del dorso della sovraccoperta, peraltro copia in ottimo stato -- Albrecht Altdorfer, « il più geniale fra gli allievi di Dürer e, come lo definì il critico Franz Kugler nel 1842, visse in Germania fra la fine del '400 e i primi anni del '500. Più che "allievo" di Dürer egli ne fu un ammiratore, ma la sua arte seguì un cammino al di fuori delle grandi direttrici in cui confluivano, con diversi risultati, gli sforzi degli artisti dell'epoca. Egli fu il maggiore e il più dotato rappresentante della cosiddetta "scuola danubiana", cioè di quel fenomeno artistico originale che si sviluppò nel territorio lungo il Danubio da Ratisbona a Vienna nei primi decenni del XVI secolo e il cui maggiore merito fu la "scoperta" del paesaggio come soggetto autonomo e valido per se stesso, non subalterno rispetto alla figura. La sua arte, pur distaccandosi dalla tradizione medievale perché libera dalla stilizzazione e dagli schemi che questa imponeva, rimase tuttavia altrettanto disancorata da quel rinnovato entusiasmo per il "classicismo" che tanto invece aveva entusiasmato Dürer. Sembra piuttosto che Altdorfer utilizzi a suo piacimento motivi arcaici e contemporanei, sfruttando quanto i due diversi momenti gli offrono. In questo si riflettono i contrasti di un'epoca di grandi rivolgimenti: economici, sociali, artistici e religiosi. Conosciuto e ammirato dai suoi contemporanei, sia come pittore e incisore, sia come membro stimato del Consiglio cittadino, Altdorfer fu quasi dimenticato dalla critica nei secoli immediatamente successivi per "riapparire nell'800. E non a caso: il suo colorismo accentuato e visionario, le figure tracciate secondo indifferenza soggettivi, talora nella più assoluta indifferenza per la precisione del dettaglio e per le regole della proporzione, ma soprattutto i suoi paesaggi misteriosamente illuminati da globi fosforescenti, sovrastati da grandi alberi che dominano sulla figura umana, rivelano una sensibilità "moderna", tanto da essere definito da alcuni un "romantico". L'attenta e chiara biografia critica che il prof. Friedbert Ficker ci offre in queste pagine, collegando la figura di Altdorfer agli importanti avvenimenti dell'epoca in cui si svolse la sua parabola artistica, e la ricchezza delle illustrazioni sparse lungo il volume - sedici grandi particolari su doppia pagina, una scelta di opere grafiche e pittoriche e infine il catalogo completo dei dipinti - ripropongono in modo esauriente e affascinante la figura di un artista non abbastanza conosciuto e che merita di essere "riscoperto".…
