Lugd. Batvarum: Ex Officinâ Elseviriana, 1635, 16°, 377 pp., 3 fl., Pergament d. Thomas Fienus, born Fyens or Feyens, in 1567 in Louvain, died in March 1631 in the same city, was a professor of medicine at the University of Louvain. Son of the musician and physician Johannes Fienus, a pupil of Adrien Romain, he began his studies around 1593. After studying with Rembert Dodoens and Forestus at Leiden University for three years, he went to Bologna to study with Jerome Mercurialis. Shortly afterwards, he returned to Louvain, where he taught medicine and mathematics under Jean Storms. In 1602, he offered some verses to his master Roomen for the publication of his mathematical ideas. Well under way, in 1609 he dedicated his work 'De viribus imaginationis tractus' (Louvain, Gérard Rivius) to Prince Ernest of Bavaria, who appointed him his personal physician. In this treatise, Fienus recognised the curative virtues of an imagination simulated by an external operator. According to him, 'imagination is capable of transforming the body'. See - L. J.
