L'arte come contemplazione delle idee. Come si possono conoscere le idee? La conoscenza intellettuale e razionale, asservita com'è alla volontà, non conosce - l'abbiamo visto - che relazioni tra oggetti, inserisce gli oggetti nello spazio, nel tempo, e li lega tra loro in rapporti causali, giungendo al massimo a "concetti" (ossia a pure e semplici classificazioni generali delle cose); dunque essa non può raggiungere le idee. Ora, secondo Schopenhauer l'unico modo per conseguire la conoscenza delle idee consiste nella «soppressione dell'individualità del soggetto conoscente». Ma ciò può avvenire soltanto se il soggetto «riempie tutta la sua coscienza della contemplazione tranquilla di qualche oggetto naturale presente, o di qualsiasi altra cosa, e si perde completamente in quest'oggetto»: allora, e solo allora, egli «dimentica il suo individuo, la sua volontà, e non sussiste più se non come soggetto puro, come limpido specchio dell'oggetto». In questi casi il soggetto si identifica con l'oggetto; il tendere proprio della volontà si placa momentaneamente, e l'individuo raggiunge una condizione che è «al di là del dolore, al di là della volontà, al di là del tempo». Questo vero e proprio «miracolo» è opera dell'arte: un qualsiasi oggetto, che «nel vortice della corrente non figurava se non come una particella fuggitiva evanescente», diviene per l'arte «il rappresentante del tutto», diventa «idea».
