Definito da Giorgio Vasari «raro» ed «eccellente pittore», Boccaccio Boccaccino rielaborò, in modo personale, la lezione impartita da Leonardo da Vinci a Milano e da Giovanni Bellini e Giorgione a Venezia, rappresentando un punto di riferimento per i maestri cremonesi delle generazioni successive, tra i quali si annoverano Gianfrancesco Bembo, Altobello Melone, Giulio Campi e, suo figlio, Camillo Boccaccino. Si comprendono pertanto le ragioni secondo le quali Luigi Lanzi, sul finire del Settecento, ritenne che «Boccaccio Boccaccino è fra' cremonesi ciò che sono il Ghirlandaio, il Mantegna, il Vannucci, il Francia nelle scuole loro; il miglior moderno fra gli antichi e il miglior antico fra' moderni». Il percorso di mostra, attraverso un'accurata selezione di capolavori convocati dai principali musei nazionali italiani, accostati per l'occasione a dipinti mai esposti al pubblico, scandisce le principali fasi di attività del pittore, dai suoi esordi tra Ferrara, Genova e Milano sino agli anni veneziani e cremonesi, dove Boccaccino mise a punto un linguaggio raffinato il cui manifesto è rappresentato dall'iconica Zingarella delle Gallerie degli Uffizi, immagine guida della mostra e del catalogo. L'esposizione permette inoltre di apprezzare, dopo il restauro, il frammento della pala d'altare della chiesa di San Pietro al Po a Cremona, l'ultima opera eseguita in vita da Boccaccino, recentemente acquisita dal Museo Diocesano, che si fregia così di ben esemplari dell'artista. Pittore eccentrico e anticonformista come pochi altri del suo tempo, Bellotti riuscì a stupire e a distinguersi nella competitiva scena veneziana alla metà del Seicento, proponendosi con uno stile contrassegnato da una spiccata vocazione alla resa del dato reale che, talvolta, sconfina in una sorta di iperrealismo ante litteram. La forte propensione naturalistica delle sue opere, aventi come protagonisti donne e uomini segnati dall?età avanzata, si combina, nella prima fase, con affascinanti soggetti allegorici ed esoterici, apprezzatissimi dai contemporanei e celebrati dalle fonti letterarie. Dopo i viaggi a Monaco di Baviera (1668-1669) e a Milano (1673-1675 circa), in concomitanza con l?illustre incarico di soprintendente alle gallerie dei Gonzaga a Mantova (1681-1691), il pittore si dedicherà invece ai temi di genere. Le opere eseguite nella seconda parte di carriera risultano così incentrate sulla rappresentazione di mendicanti, pellegrini e popolani, vale a dire gli ?ultimi?, restituiti con una sorprendente verità ottica e, soprattutto, in modo dignitoso e partecipato, quasi a volerne nobilitare lo status. In tal senso queste testimonianze si caricano di valenze profonde che, per molti versi, autorizzano ad annettere Pietro Bellotti al cosiddetto filone della «pittura della realtà», considerandolo un precursore della memorabile stagione che, in Lombardia, avrebbe trovato in Giacomo Ceruti uno dei suoi massimi esponenti. Nel ripercorrere la parabola di questo maestro, e provando ad affrontare alcuni enigmi interpretativi che ancora caratterizzano la sua vicenda biografica e professionale, l?esposizione ordinata alle Gallerie dell?Accademia, e il relativo catalogo, offrono al tempo stesso un?imperdibile occasione per approfondire la magmatica cultura figurativa del Seicento veneziano, mettendo a confronto capolavori di prim?ordine convocati da prestigiose istituzioni museali nazionali e internazionali, insieme a recenti acquisizioni del Ministero della Cultura.
