Il ne s'agit pas simplement d'une illustration astronomique : Dalla Briga y propose une carte sélénographique, c'est-à-dire une représentation cartographique de la surface de la Lune, qui s'inscrit dans la succession des grandes cartes de Hevelius et Riccioli. Une étude de l'Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze la décrit précisément comme une synthèse des cartographies lunaires antérieures, de Hevelius jusqu'à Cassini. Dalla Briga y introduit notamment deux désignations qui sont aujourd'hui disparues : une zone marquée Ω (oméga), dédiée au jésuite napolitain Nicola Partenio Giannettasio ; une zone marquée ψ (psi), à laquelle il proposait d'associer les noms des trois Rois mages : Melchior, Gaspard et Balthazar. Ces noms n'ont finalement pas survécu dans la nomenclature lunaire moderne.
