Quando a Firenze arrivò la notizia della tragica morte di Enrico IV, assassinato da Ravaillac il 14 maggio 1610 nel cuore di Parigi, il giovane Cosimo II decise di allestire i funerali in effigie per il "Re cristianissimo", seguendo una consolidata tradizione politica inaugurata dal padre Ferdinando I e in virtù della solida alleanza stretta con la Casa di Francia nel 1600 a seguito del matrimonio di Maria de' Medici con Enrico IV. Le esequie avvennero il 15 settembre 1610 nella Basilica di San Lorenzo, allestita scenograficamente con un grande uso di candele. L'apparato funebre era corredato da un programma iconografico che comprendeva, fra l'altro, ventisei grandi tele dipinte a monocromo dedicate alla vita di Enrico IV. Per l'esecuzione del ciclo, su progetto di Giulio Parigi, ci si avvalse del comprovato talento di un gruppo di artisti toscani gravitanti nell'orbita dell'accademia, fondata da Cosimo I de' Medici. Diciannove di questi dipinti, appartenenti alle collezioni fiorentine, sono stati ritrovati, restaurati e sono esposti in mostra in un itinerario completato da altre opere significative sia dal punto di vista storico che artistico, come un magnifico bozzetto di Pieter Paul Rubens, con lo Sbarco di Maria de' Medici a Marsiglia eseguito a modello per il ciclo per il palazzo del Lussemburgo, che Maria commissionò al pittore tra il 1622 e il 1624.
