Condition: Overall good plus. A collection of forty-nine photographs of the Los Angeles Fire Department, likely from the 1970s. The photographs were taken by Joe Ortiz, the first Mexican American with an English-language radio talk show; R.L. Oliver, known for his photographs of the Watts Riots; and Ken Papaleo, who would win Pulitzers for his coverage of the Columbine shooting and the 2003 Colorado wildfires. The photographs are action shots, showing fires and car wreck scenes. Many of the fire shots were taken from afar, though in some the photographer was positioned quite near the firefighters. For instance, several shots show a group of at least four firefighters with a dalmation hosing the exterior of a low industrial building. Though some shots mainly show the fire, in others the firefighting apparatus is visible, helping to date and locate the shots. In one, a Crown firecoach is parked at the bottom of an embankment while firefighters spray down a residential building standing at the top; according to the LA County Fire Museum, the Crown apparatus began to be phased out of the arsenal in 1977 in favor of designs with enclosed cabs. In another, engines 4 and 11 are parked outside of a smoking apartment building, locating the photograph in the downtown LA area. The car wreck shots are generally taken from much closer to the scene, with graphic depictions of the wreckage and victims. The sole color shot in the collection shows EMTs and firefighters converging on a white car with its hood destroyed; the driver has been placed in a neck brace. In another wreck shot, a man lays on the ground behind his motorcycle as EMTs arrive with an extraction board and gurney. EMS is a surprisingly new innovation, dating only to the 1960s and 1970s; LA's first paramedic services were created in 1969 with cardiologist Walter S. Graf's pilot "mobile critical care unit" program.[1] In fact, a new law, the Wedworth-Townsend Paramedic Act, had to be enacted to allow medical care at the scene and in transit, as doing so was legally fraught. The Los Angeles areathough the county, not the citywas at the forefront of the development and popularization of paramedic services, including via the TV series Emergency!, which depicted the work of paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.[2] Of interest to historians of firefighting and emergency response, especially the development of emergency medical services. [1] "Doctor who helped launch modern paramedic system dies at 98," CBS News, October 30, 2015. [2] Paul Bergman, "EMERGENCY!: Send a TV Show to Rescue Paramedic Services!", University of Baltimore Law Review, 36, no. 3 (Spring 2007): 347369. Forty-nine photographs measuring 8 x 10 inches with some larger, most with photographers' stamps verso. Most seem to have been previously affixed to a surface and torn off; some tears and residue intersect with subject. Some with water damage.…

Condition: Overall excellent. Offered here is a collection of letters and art sent from people incarcerated in the California State Prison system, primarily from a husband ("P.") and wife ("A.") to P's mother and stepfather. A., who served a shorter sentence than P., worked as an inmate-firefighter. Currently, about twenty to thirty percent of California's firefighters are incarcerated people, and about ten percent of those are women; they work cutting the fireline, receiving little compensation and at a significantly higher risk of injury than both their non-incarcerated counterparts and other prison laborers. They also are not eligible to become firefighters upon release, due to California's laws about both employment and EMT certification following a felony conviction.[1] A. writes of her training: "I've been training for camp. Its realy realy hard. This has got to be the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. Well Im gonna make this my last trip to prison well, I hope so anyway." (January 12, 2009) She also writes from the field that "Its very hard and dangerouse but I guess Im used to it" (June 6, 2009), with later letters giving more detailed descriptions; for instance: "Im not in San Diego right now because my crew and my cousins crew got sent to all the fires that are up North =) we left on the 4th and we've been on the road and to a couple of fires since I don't know when we are going back but Im making money! yesterday I worked a 24 hour shift and we got back to have our down time to rest this morning. Its very tireing and hard I felt like I was hiking forever! Right know Im up in Shasta County its beautif up here and I've never been this far from home befor." (August 14, 2009) A. wanted to save up to buy a car. She wrote that firefighting is "hard work for a dollar a day" (December 14, 2009)in 2023, the inmate-firefighter pay rate was raised to an astounding 16 to 74 cents per hour with a maximum daily rate of $5.80 to $10.24.[2] P., on a longer sentence in various higher-security facilities, grappled with boredom, loneliness, and the bureaucracy involved in trying to contact his wife and family. The prisons where he was incarcerated were frequently on lockdown for months at a time, including the Corcoran Substance Abuse Treatment Facility, which locked down in June of 2009 following a gang-related riot. He often describes being hungry and not allowed to go to the commissary, either because of lockdowns or just because "there not letting Hispanics go" (January 30, 2011). One way he seemed to have dealt with his circumstances was through art. Over time, his package requestsincarcerees can only be sent packages through approved third-party vendors, which contract with prisonsincluded, alongside toothpaste and deodorant, art supplies and even a typewriter and books on "how to properly write a novel" (January 30, 2011). He mentions copying drawings, and the reader can see him experiment with different handwriting styles in the letters and on envelopes. The art in the collection includes greeting cards with teddy bear, clowna common character in Chicano artand nature motifs; a Las Vegas Raiders butterfly (signed "E", most likely by P.'s cellmate Ernie, for whom drawing is a "little hustle to make money for food and supplies" (January 30)); and a pair of beaded earrings that P. bought for $10 "to some Indian here" (August 25, 2010). Of interest to scholars of outsider art and incarceration in the California prison system. Two vols. Oblong 4to. 13 x 10 in. [(4 pp - type-written table of contents), 44; 44 pp (unpaginated)], on thick gray paper stock. Vol. I w/ 53 photos ranging in size from 2.5 x 4 in. up to 8 x 10.5 in., most of them with tipped-in typed-captions below, some with commercial photographers stamps at lower right corner, a few mounted, most on glossy photo paper stock (w/ 6 photos removed); Vol. II w/ 22 photos ranging in size from 4.5 x 7 up to 9.5 x 11.75 in., some w/ stamps at upper corner, most on glossy photo paper stock. Uniformly bound in padded pigskin post binders, vellum sewn at fore-edges, bound with tan silk braid at gutter margin (some wear & occasional minor tears to a couple leaves), still a VG- set. These incomparable and unique photo albums include excellent original photographs depicting early firefighting apparatus & fire suppression equipment for Protex fire fighting foam. Founded in 1932 Protex was established to develop, produce, and market a wide range of chemical and biochemical products for manufacturers, primarily using a wide range of subsidiaries. The French subsidiary in St. Denis focused on fire fighting chemical foam which was far more effective in suppressing industrial and chemical fires, especially when installed in factories, or refineries, such as those for alcohol, breweries, oil refineries, and more. The Protex salesman has included images here for large fire extinguisher tanks, nozzles, a fire shield for firefighters to carry, or push forward in fire fighting efforts, many different handcarts that could be pulled or pushed carrying foam tanks and hoses, pipes for pumping the mixture into the air with moveable carts, and much more. Of particular interest are the numerous types of fire engine pumpers for Protex foams, including heavy trucks built by Latil and Laffly. The Latil Company was founded in 1897, and invented steerable front wheel drive for heavy trucks, often employed in their fire engines, and would later produce many armored vehicles and tanks during World War I, and then before World War II. Laffly was one of the largest French manufacturers of fire engines, producing them well into the 1950s. These albums include images of those produced for French Colonies, such as the one for use in Dakar, Senegal, which in the 1930s was still one of the major cities of the French Empire on par with Beirut and Hanoi. These albums also show the special railcars, pumping equipment, and fire suppression systems for liquor factories in Provence, and industrial alcohol factories in Lyon. Many of the photographs were taken by the noted commercial photographers, Paulus Fils. The sons of Paulus were located in Paris in several places from the end of the 19th century up through the 1920s, and by 1925 were at the address stamped in the corner of these images, 82, rue d'Amsterdam. Most records show their images ranged from Wedding photos, to photos of French notables, architecture, and some commercial factories. These images are unrecorded. No copies located in Worldcat.…

[Japan]: at end (in trans.): "copied 1842." Japanese cities have always been plagued by terrible fires. Regarding Edo, "the wooden construction of all of the city and the narrow lanes of commoner quarters made fire a devastating experience, and it came sufficiently frequently to be called 'the flowers of Edo.' Fires were no respecters of status and rank, and when driven by winter winds in the dry season they roared through the city.In the 268 years of Tokugawa rule, the Tosa 'upper' yashiki (at 'Blacksmith Bridge') suffered eighteen fires, and the Shiba middle residence burned twelve times. Four of these were citywide conflagrations. Merchant areas burned thirty-one times in two centuries, and even the shogun's castle suffered major damage seven times."Jansen, The Making of Modern Japan (Harvard: 2000), p. 151. This wonderfully detailed scroll is a record of the Great Meiwa Fire of 1772 in Edo, one of the three most severe fires of the Edo era, with a 30-square-mile section of the city destroyed (including an estimated 178 temples and shrines, 127 daimyo residences, 878 non-official residences, 8705 houses of bannermen, and 628 blocks of merchant dwellings). Almost 15,000 people died, and another 4,000 went missing. The fire was deliberately set by a Buddhist priest of the Daien-ji Temple on the eastern side of the Meguro River. Because of the regularity of such fires, the city of Edo organized 48 brigades of trained firefighters, with each group having a specific name after the old i ro ha alphabet. Our remarkable scroll consists of one enormously long panorama, which can be divided into three sections: the alarm, the actual fire, and the aftermath. In the first long scene, we are clearly in a shopping area, with numerous merchants' stores and warehouses (kura). We see some of the residents and the trained fire brigade men (hikeshi) rushing to the fire. A man on horseback is cantering through the streets, raising the alarm. The firefighters carry tools primarily of the building trades: ropes, saws, mauls, and the tobiguchi, the famous "fireman's hook." Other residents and their servants and staff prepare for the oncoming fire: each residence has a water barrel in front, ready for such an occasion. We see both buke hikeshi ???? (samurai firefighters) and machibikeshi ??? (merchant firefighters). As we proceed to the actual fire, we pass by a tall fire tower, with men at the top observing the fire. A man is reinforcing a kura, supposedly fireproof, with further reinforcements of mud. The following scenes are all action: merchants preparing for the worst, servants removing merchandise, firefighters gathering and organizing their equipment in a staging area, water being drawn from wells, men removing wooden roof shingles, the elderly being carried away, statues being carried from temples, a congested bridge with people fleeing the fire and the firemen struggling to go in the opposite direction, workers in a walled mansion removing valuables, people on roofs removing flying embers, firefighters carrying the portable pump (ry?dosui) known as the "water-spewing dragon," evacuated storefronts, etc. The second long scene shows the firefighters in action: buckets of water being filled, firefighters climbing and descending ladders, men removing embers from roofs, and the conflagration itself, vividly depicted in rich red colors for the fires themselves and gray tones for the considerable smoke. And, then, as we proceed, we see the resulting devastation, with almost nothing surviving. This section is simply horrific. The firemen survey the landscape and go through the area putting out the numerous smaller fires. Government officials gather to assess the damage. We see firemen from different companies in a brawl. The final scene shows the beginnings of the reconstruction of the area. Carpenters have brought in building materials, houses and shops are being rebuilt, merchants have reoccupied their surviving shops and restocked, residents.…
