Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Date. Published ca 1863 and illustrates hand silhouettes of animals. Card covers are a bit marked and rubbed, spine tips and corners are a little bumped and worn, name and date (1867) on the front flyleaf, contents are possibly re-inserted - the title page is ragged on the edges and has a few short tears, lower corner missing, frontispiece is now after the title page and thread is visible through the pages, some internal foxing and other marks, one page has a scrape - still good. 4to, 8 leaves (printed on one side of the paper).

Publisher's red boards with applied engraved title illustration to the front board (depicting a girl making a shadow puppet of a kitten). 13.5 x 15.5 cm. The verso of the front board is the title page. The interior consists of 11 folding concertina pages of engraved illustrations, each a diagram depicting the position of the hands to make the shadow puppet, with an illustration of the intended effect alongside. The shadow puppets being mainly animals including giraffe, goose, billy goat, rabbit, parrot etc. There is a printed advertisement leaf attached to the inside of the rear board for other Read & Co. juvenile titles, several of the titles stated as being illustrated by George Cruikshank and Alfred Crowquill. NB: the hand puppets are entirely original and have not been hand-coloured. About VG (some of the illustrations are a bit grubby, a few with pencil squiggles by a former childish owner).
