Perkins - A hero of the modern civil rights movement as a man who has fought for opportunity, made the most of it and sought to leave a better future for those who come in his path. These stories will inspire you - I hope - as much as learning about your life and accomplishments inspired me. - Juan Williams 4-10-87." Juan Williams (b. 1954) is a political analyst known for his work on NPR and Fox News. Williams wrote Eyes on the Prize to accompany the Emmy Award-winning documentary series of the same name. Dr. Edward J. Perkins (1928-2020) served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, as well as Liberia, South Africa, and Australia throughout his 25-year foreign service career. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan appointed Perkins to serve as ambassador to South Africa in hopes of fending off a congressional override to his veto of economic sanctions against the country. It was a controversial decision amidst apartheid in South Africa, and many Black leaders urged Perkins to not take the role. Perkins accepted the position and served until 1989, one year before Nelson Mandela was released from prison. He was appointed U.N. Ambassador by George H.W. Bush in 1992, serving for one year. First edition of Eyes on the Prize by Juan Williams, inscribed to U.N. Ambassador and diplomat Edward J. Perkins. (illustrator). Signed.…

Dirac had promulgated a theory according to which the ration of the magnetic moment of the proton to that of the electron should have been the same as the inverse ration of their masses. This theory was believed so generally that when Stern, O. R. Frisch, and this writer began the very difficult experiments, they were told more than once by eminent theoreticians that they were wasting their time and effort. But Stern's perseverance paid off. Measurements showed a proton magnetic moment two or three times larger than expected. While that result has since been reproduced with greater accuracy, a really satisfactory theoretical explanation is still outstanding. It is this work that was specifically mentioned in Stern's Nobel Prize citation." - Complete DSB online. Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition. Original boards, 16vo, 82 pages. 16 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates as "From the Wrath of the Oppressor." Early literary work of S.Y. Agnon published in Germany. "S.Y. Agnon was an Israeli writer who was one of the leading modern Hebrew novelists and short-story writers. In 1966 he was the co-recipient, with Nelly Sachs, of the Nobel Prize for Literature. "Shmuel Yosef Agnon, a prominent figure in Hebrew literature and co-recipient of the 1966 Nobel Prize in Literature, is widely recognized as the leading modern writer in the Hebrew language. Born on July 17, 1888, in Buczacz, Galicia, he was raised in a family with a rich scholarly Orthodox background, which profoundly influenced his early education in Jewish folklore and religious texts. Emigrating to Palestine in 1907, Agnon engaged with Zionist ideals, while his writing increasingly reflected the contrasts between the nostalgia of the Eastern European shtetl and the complexities of life in modern Palestine. His literary career evolved during a lengthy stay in Germany from 1913 to 1924, where he was exposed to contemporary European literature and developed lasting connections with notable Jewish intellectuals. Agnon's works often explore themes of cultural dislocation and spiritual tension, particularly through stories that merge humor and melancholy, such as his celebrated novel The Bridal Canopy, which draws parallels to Cervantes' Don Quixote. His later works, including A Guest for the Night, reflect a deep sense of loss and alienation in the wake of the Holocaust and the destruction of shtetl culture. Agnon's narratives resonate universally, offering insights into the transitions from traditional to modern societies, making his contributions significant not only to Jewish literature but to world literature as a whole."
