The first edition in English of a translation from the German of Gottlob Eusebius Fischer's Gustav oder der Papagey (Leipzig, 1795); a charming tale in which, against the advice of his pastor father, a young boy, Gustavus, purchases a flamboyant but utterly useless macaw with which he has become infatuated. His preoccupation with the purposeless parrot inexorably leads to the neglect of his studies, the loss of friendships, and, most drastically, his failure to promptly obtain medical assistance for his unwell father. Soon thereafter, thanks to the ineptitude and general idiocy of a local boy, the blundering bird is placed in a sack for transportation in which it promptly suffocates. Size: 12mo.
