Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. Charles Green & Hedley Fitton (illustrator). Scarce edition. Dark green cloth boards, Gilt lettering front and spine, and blind stamped decoration on front. The book has been damaged by damp, there is extensive foxing and other marks through out, the FFEP is missing and both boards are split away from page block. Boards and spine are complete and attached to page block but badly damp stained, and slightly warped. Please request photos to see details of condition. The book appears complete in terms of page numbering, pictures/illustrations, and fold out maps. This edition was published in 1896. The first editions of the novel in 1876 were published in three volumes, this 1896 issue brings those three volumes together, there are two appendices added by the author, dated 1881 and 1896 suggesting that there was a second edition in 1881 making this the third edition. The third appendix runs to 15 pages and begins "The lapse of years since this novel was penned, the sweeping demolition of the town it describes, and the birth of the generation who cannot recall it, not only furnish reasons for the issue of this pictorial edition, but for the author to add somewhat to her former communications with her readers, before she, too, is swept away, and further annotation from her pen is impossible." Please note, this is a very heavy book which will attract additional postage costs - please contact me before ordering to confirm additional costs.
