Condition: Fair. - Small quarto, 10-1/4 inches high by 8 inches wide. Decorative green coth, elaborately decorated in gilt, orange and blue on the front cover and the spine. The top edge is gilt. The covers are heavily rubbed and stained with wear to the edges and corners. The head and tail of the faded spine are chipped and the cloth is splitting along the front joint. x & 204 deckle-edged pages, illustrated with a color frontispiece, 62 full-page color plates, plus textual illustrations and vignettes by Augustine Fitzgerald. The overlapping edges of the pages are darkened and slightly creased. There is some soiling throughout and the plate opposite page 140 is loose with some staining to the margin of the plate as well as to the next couple of pages. The top corners of 10 pages are creased, including the top corner of the plate opposite page 120 and there is a crease to the half-title. A previous owner's name is penned on the front endpaper. A complete copy.

This is an exceptional copy of the Fitzgerald book. It is attractively and sturdily bound; its dust jacket torn but quite presentable. The publisher's decorative binding is sturdy, its corners sharp, the head and foot of its spine lightly worn; the top edge of its textblock is gilt, the fore- and bottom edges deckled; the inner hinges are strong, offsetting from the dust jacket at the fore-edges of the front and rear free endpapers, the contents and the colored illustrations are fine. The dust jacket, now in a Gaylord protector, is clean, with losses at its top edge and at the foot of its spine, and with the loss of some three-quarters of a square inch from the center of its spine. The title misprint ("America" for "Africa") on the front panel of the dust jacket has been corrected in pencil. 1940 grams.

Former owner's illustrated book plate mounted on front pastedown. Solid VG to VG+, Near Fine were it not for the foxing, which is a bit distracting but entirely cosmetic, otherwise exceptional.
