For a Better Life: Yugoslavs on the Goldfields of Western Australia 1890-1970 is an in-depth social, economic, and political history book written by Dr Criena Fitzgerald OAM and published in November 2021. The book highlights the critical, yet largely undocumented, contributions and struggles of self-funded migrants from the former Yugoslavia (primarily Dalmatian Croatians) who shaped the Western Australian mining industry. Key Elements of the Book Author: Dr Criena Fitzgerald, a prominent Western Australian historian who dedicated seven years of research and oral history interviews to this project. Focus Population: While officially recorded under the umbrella term "Yugoslavs", the majority of these migrants were Dalmatian Croatians fleeing economic hardship and political instability in Europe. Industrial Contribution: Migrants worked grueling jobs as boggers, truckers, and machine miners. Crucially, they made up 75% of the woodcutters on the "woodlines" providing fuel to sustain the world-class gold mines. Second Largest Group: The research reveals that Yugoslavs were the second largest migrant group on the WA Goldfields during this era, surpassed only by the Italians. Core Themes & Historical Events Covered: The 1934 Kalgoorlie/Boulder Race Riots: The book provides the first historical account of the devastating 1934 anti-immigrant riots written explicitly from the perspective of the victimized community. It details how around 400 Yugoslavs were made homeless after their properties were looted and burned. Domestic and Hard Border Realities: It explores the systemic prejudices, wartime internments (particularly during WWI when they held Austro-Hungarian passports), and strict government controls over their movements and freedom. Women and Personal Stories: The text heavily utilises oral histories, love stories, personal letters, and testimonies to capture the isolation of migrant women navigating a harsh, arid bush lifestyle.
