A perda desta fortaleza, foi inevitável devido à superioridade do inimigo e ao facto de Portugal enfrentar a Espanha, na Europa, durante a Guerra da Restauração, sendo muito difícil o envio de reforços. Contém uma cuidada transcrição de muitos documentos existentes em bibliotecas e arquivos como os seguintes: Biblioteca da Academia das Ciências, Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa, Torre do Tombo e Arquivo Nacional Ultramarino. Principal estudo e fonte deste acontecimento traumático para os portugueses da época, que cruza as informações contidas em documentos de diversos autores, permitindo um conhecimento pormenorizado dos combates, feitos de armas, motivações dos intervenientes, rendição, saída dos portugueses sobreviventes, a tomada de posse e a instalação na cidade, pelos holandeses.
