Hardcover. 293 p.; 22 cm. `When Christ was reaffirmed as the living King the faithful did not trouble to distinguish between fact and metaphor. The Kingship of Christ thus served as the single rallying point for all, like the Puritans, who committed the future to their faith; and the regnum Christi was for Milton the ultimate justification of the ways of God. Precisely what that Kingdom meant, however, and what it exacted, were matters upon which the faithful disagreed throughout the course of the Puritan Revolution. Milton's whole development in fact may be seen as an attempt to recover the essential trugh of the Kingdom of Christ beneath the protean shapes it assumed in his experience and in the violence of a revolution. So in the process he espoused and discarded positions with a vehemence and frequency that has sometimes troubled his readers. But in this respect his career testifies to the general political truth with which we ought to be familiar: that few revolutionary positions have ever remained doctrinaire or even stable in the face of the continually renewing necessity for reconciling profound practical changes with the assumption of a fixed predetermined end. The one segment of Puritanism which kept its revolutionary momentum longest was opportunist on principle, subordinating every successive course of action to its understanding of one end--service to the Kingship of Christ. To Milton and his contemporaries, the problems involved in understanding the practical consequences of that Kingship were the real problems, and they are the ones I have attempted to explore.'
