An excellent original example of a "Hong Wei Bing" ["RED GUARD"] marching flag, with the heavy white cloth pole guide at the left edge. . *** This flag was used by the "Hong Wei Bing" while they paraded through the streets on their anarchistic rampage throughout China. . This flag was made and issued by "Red Guards" in Nanning, Guangxi province, commonly known as a 'hot bed' of "Cultural Revolutionary" & "Red Guard" activities. . Tens of thousands of "Red Guards" were gunned down by the P.L.A. [People's Liberation Army] in April 1967 when anarchy ruled the streets. The P.L.A. was instructed by Chairman Mao and Marshal Lin to end the Cultural Revolution. Some factions refused to comply with this official order. Marshall Lin put a forceful end to the Red Guards" to continue to wage chaos throughout the country. It took nearly two more years before the Red Guards disbanded and order prevailed. . Red Guards destroyed historical relics and artifacts and ransacked cultural and religious sites. Mao officially declared the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1969, but its active phase lasted until at least 1971, when Lin Biao fled and died in a plane crash, accused of a botched coup against Mao. . *** CHINESE TEXT ON THE FLAG READS: Printed in yellow stencil over red cloth. . a. This original example was used by "Red Guards" in the Guangxi area [Nanning]. It is a very rare and the majority of them were eventually destroyed after 1976, when the "CULTURAL REVOLUTION" was something the Chinese were ashamed of and wanted to distance themselves from. Most remnants of the Cultural Revolution were destroyed or lost through the attrition rate. Few exist in this kind of excellent condition. Obviously coveted by an old Red Guard ! . This original flag was actually carried during the "WENHUA DA GEMING" ["CULTURAL REVOLUTION"] during the official dates from around August 18, 1966 through February 1967, and unofficially through September, 1976. .
