Tovarich More Red Letter Days by Viktor Flambeau. Photographs are by author, illustrations by Frederic Rockwell. A memoir/description of life in Soviet Russia and down through Ukraine, Turkey and Greece. Focus is the Soviet Union. Flambeau is the pen name of Gertrude R. Brigham (1876-1971), an American Impressionist Painter. After graduating from the Boston Normal Art School, graduated from the George Washington Univ. in Washington, D. C: A.B., 1913; A.M., 1914; and Ph.D., in 1916, being the first woman in the English Dept. to receive a GWU Ph.D. In 1916, she became Instructor in Art and Archaeology; also assistant in the English department. She took six trips to foreign countries in the interest of Art. For several years she was the Art Editor of the Washington Times Herald under the nom de plume Viktor Flambeau, and of the Washington Post, under her own name. In 1924 she became associate editor in the Canton Christian College, Canton, China. Was also on the Editorial staff of the magazine, "Art and Archaeology and Public Affairs." She is the author of "The Study and Enjoyment of Pictures." In 1925 she returned to the US from China on account of the troubled condition of Canton. She then published "Red Letter Days in Europe with a Glimpse of Northern Africa," under her pen name.
