No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Photographs, 5.5 x 3.5 inches (about 14 x 8.9 cm). Six of the eight photos here are labeled Foto Flatau. Images include one of the Darien Indians, two of San Blas Indian women and children, and five featuring natives of the Ocú District in Herrera Province. German-born Photographer John F. Flatau (1899-1993) lived in Guatemala for a time after which he moved to California, became an American citizen, attended UC Berkeley, and enlisted in the U.S. Army starting in 1930. The army stationed him in the Panama Canal Zone. When his enlistment period was up he stayed for many years in Panama and worked out of the Balboa district YMCA where he sold photo supplies and his own photo postcards. His photographs of the country can be found in several historical collections. Very good condition, with a few of the photos having writing on the reverse side (used as postcards but apparently mailed home in envelopes). Two are dated 1945.

Seller: Live Oak Booksellers, Langley, WA, U.S.A.
No Binding. Condition: Fine. 12 black and white 4.5 x 2.75" photos together with another "photo" listing the captions for the 12 photos by John F. Flatau--all in a printed envelope with the typewritten information on the front as follows: "Panama Canal (1) 12 [photographs] $ 0.50." Front panel of envelope also contains the following information: John F. Flatau, Y.M.C.A. Photo Shop, Balboa, C.Z., Phonte: Balboa 2781. All photos in fine condition with no marks, or cracking, or bending. Envelope very light soiled and, of course, opened on one end. Born in Germany, John Fred Flatau [1899-1993] moved to Panama in 1930 and became a citizen in 1940. He was a skilled photographer and used his skills over the next 50 years to record the people of Panama, their customs, and their country, especially for the postcards that he sold. I would guess that this collection of 12 photos of the Panama Canal dates from the 1940s, to judge from the dress of persons appearing in one of the photos. The list of photos is as follows: 1. Panama Canal Administration Building; 2. General view of Balboa Harbor; 3. Balboa Docks seen from Sosa (Signal) Hill U.S.S. Memphis at Cock [USS Memphis was commissioned in 1939]; 4. General view of Miraflores Locks; 5. Lock chambers as seen from Control tower; 6. French Liner "Oregon" in Miraflores Locks; 7, H.M.A. "Nelson" in Miraflores Locks [commissioned in 1927]; 8. German Cruiser "Karlsruhe" in Miraflores Locks [commissioned in 1914 and sent to the opening ceremony for the Panama Canal in 1914]; 9. Steamer in Culebra Cut; 10. Commercial vessel in Gatun Locks; 11. Cargo boat entering Gatun Lake; 12. Night scene - Miraflores Locks. A rare collection of ephemera related to the Panama Canal.
