The Binding is green eighth cloth to green patterned boards (ocean with giant octopus and fish), colors uniform throughout, birght silver title, etc., to the spine, illustrated endpapers showing the Nautilus, some repair to the rear binding visible, no markings other than the previously mentioned gift inscription, and lower corners square, upper corners bumped. No slipcase. See the accompanying photos. xi, [ii], 325 pages (including numerous partial pages of color illustrations plus 18 unnumbered pages of color illustrations. 7 1/4" x 10 1/2" X 1 3/8". Jules Verne's magnificent science fiction adventure novel that foresaw the widespread use of submarines was originally published in France in 1870 as Vingt Mille Lieues sous les mers. Captain Nemo, the central character, is complex, motivated by revenge, on the one hand, and a desire to aid the weak, on the other hand. This copy is translated by Mercier Lewis with an introduction by Fletcher Pratt, and numerous illustrations by Edward A. Wilson.
