Elle fut un organe majeur de ce qu'on a appelé la « nouvelle théologie ». Déjà intéressé, comme jeune chercheur, par la question oecuménique, Fouilloux avait entrepris un premier travail sur les Cahiers dans les années 1970 (« Une vision eschatologique du christianisme : Dieu vivant (1945?1955) », Revue d'histoire de l'Église de France, 57, 1971, p. 47?72). À l'époque, il n'eut pas accès aux archives, que Moré refusait de lui ouvrir. Aujourd'hui, il reprend ici, en sept chapitres, le thème de la genèse et de l'enjeu de cette revue à partir de la correspondance et des mémoires des rédacteurs de la revue d'un côté et des articles publiés, soumis à une étude à la fois qualitative et quantitative, de l'autre. Le destin de la revue est lié premièrement à celui de son initiateur Marcel Moré, « un financier mystique » qui passe de ses intérêts pour le marxisme et le surréalisme à un intérêt pour le christianisme eschatologique, voire même apocalyptique. À la sortie de la Guerre, le refus d'un « monde brisé » et d'une modernité fondée sur le mythe du progrès, entraîne un intérêt pour l'eschatologie qui vivifie la pensée de Moré. Ses collaborateurs, parmi lesquels le père Daniélou, qui construit au même moment sa théologie de l'histoire, essaient de tempérer sans succès l'« ardeur eschatologique » de Moré. L'origine des Cahiers est liée aux « rencontres spirituelles » du samedi dans le salon de Moré, quai de la Mégisserie, qui réunissent d'une manière inattendue une bonne partie de l'intelligentsia parisienne : L. Massignon, J. Wahl, G. Marcel, N. Berdiaev, V. Lossky, A. Koyré, P. Vigneaux, P. Bourgelin, Camus, Sartre, P. Klossowski, G. Bataille. Le groupe hétérogène contient une majorité de catholiques, mais aussi des protestants, des orthodoxes et des incroyants. En pleine Occupation, en 1941, aucune référence à des questions politiques n'apparaît, les discussions se replient sur la mystique. Le premier cahier sortira en 1945 en édition de luxe au Seuil. La revue, qui a obtenu plusieurs collaborations brillantes (Graham Greene, Thomas Merton, Hans Urs von Balthasar) a un personnel réduit : Marcel Moré, Louis Massignon, Jean Daniélou qui s'occupe de la rectitude doctrinale, Maurice de Gandillac. Le titre de la revue, Dieu Vivant, est choisi en rapport avec deux versets bibliques (Psaume 43, 3 et 1 Thessaloniciens 1, 9). Dans ce contexte, le christianisme de Dieu Vivant redécouvre l'importance de l'attente eschatologique, capable de lier dans la foi de tout chrétien l'histoire humaine à celle surnaturelle. Sainteté, ascèse, métanoïa renforcent la participation des catholiques à « l'affrontement cosmique » qui se joue dans l'histoire. Tout engagement dans l'histoire, par opposition à celui proposé par des chrétiens progressistes autour de la revue Jeunesse de l'Église, doit s'ancrer dans la transcendance. Le thème, celui d'un christianisme eschatologique qui veut mettre au centre de la vie de tout chrétien la fin des temps, et les itinéraires spirituels de plusieurs personnages de l'histoire du catholicisme français d'après la Deuxième Guerre : Henri de Lubac, Gaston Fessard, Louis Bouyer, Marie-Madeleine Davy, font de cette revue une lecture passionnante.
