The stories. which are retellings of old folk lore and fairy tales, even feature a dragon. They were translated into English by Paul Blackburn, and are enhanced…by the handsome monotone drawings of Floyd Sowell. Published by Doubleday and Company in 1974 this is the First Edition, bound in the publisher's reinforced library binding (or Prebound as the ISBN terms it). Both the trade binding and this binding were published simultaneously. The Doubleday 'prebounds' were not limited to libraries alone, and thus customers had a choice of bindings. The dust-jacket has a trade price, and this copy was not owned by a library. Here's an excerpt from the jacket's blurb : "This is an unusual collection of ten popular legends from Spain. In this book, Spain's foremost storyteller, Antonio Jiménez-Landi, has purposely selected one legend indigenous to each of the great regions into which the country is divided. These tales are based on old themes which wandered down the centuries, and accumulated, in their pilgrimage from generation to generation, profound wisdom and deep understanding of the Spanish soul. That Spanish folklore is deeply rooted in both Moorish and Christian traditions is evident in the author's deft selection of Spanish legends going from pre-Moorish times up through the eventual establishment of the Catholic Hispanic kingdom."
