Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Folio (13" x 16 ¾"). Metal hinge back album in brown morocco over beveled boards with metal clasps, white moiré endpapers, lithographic title leaf and index leaf printed in gold, all edges gilt. Compiled by Stanly Forbes of San Francisco, a member of the graduating class. Laid in is the photographer's four-page printed booklet listing all available photos, annotated and signed by Forbes in ink. An unusually large album, containing 78 cabinet card prints neatly laid into cut-out frames together with 18 mounted prints, a total of 96 photographs. Several cut-out frames are empty or lacking the original prints. The bottom of the spine is scuffed with part of the morocco torn away, moderate wear at the edges of the boards, else near fine, with all 96 photographs in fine condition. The album contains 55 cabinet card portraits of faculty and students; 23 miscellaneous cabinet cards that include two portraits of women, a small group of students, three group portraits of a theatrical troupe (featuring young men in women's clothes), and 17 views of the campus and buildings. The album also contains 18 large format views ranging from 9 ½" x 7 ½" to 7" x 5", including an outdoor class portrait. Born in San Francisco, Stanly Forbes was a member of Alpha Chi and studied civil engineering at Yale's Sheffield Scientific School, graduating with a Bachelor of Philosophy. In addition to Yale President Noah Porter (an outspoken anti-slavery activist), Forbes album features portraits of several faculty of Yale's Sheffield Scientific School, including some with a California connection like William H. Brewer (An American botanist who worked on the first California Geological Survey), and Chester S. Lyman, who kept an important journal of the California Gold Rush from 1848-49. After attending Yale Graduate School Forbes was put in charge of the construction of an irrigation works for a sugar plantation on Maui Island, Hawaii (1878-83), and of various lumber railroads near Eureka, California. A unique large yearbook with nearly 100 photographs in fine condition.

This is the first large-scale map of Humboldt County, one of a number of maps of northern California counties of this size published in the late 1880's-early 1890's.
