The JANUARY NUMBER for 1858, will be published early, and be in every respect greatly improved. The BOYS AND GIRLS have ever shown the greatest interest in the monthly issues of the PLAYMATE. And we feel that it is not an inappropriate time now to ask of PARENTS, TEACHERS, GUARDIANS of the young, their approbation and assistance. A very slight effort on your part would make the work doubly valuable to yourselves. For with INCREASED PATRONAGE, we could give INCREASED ATTRACTION to our pages." (Volume VII, Number 6, December, 1857).

(Volume VII, Number 5, November, 1857) Wonderfully well-preserved for its 160+ year age! "Doubtless, a greater part of my readers have witnessed exhibitions of artificial Fireworks, and have clapped their hands and cheered loudly at the brilliant display. In a dark night, when it is cloudy, and there is no moon, a single rocket, as it bursts in the air, is an interesting object. I should long ago have given the boys some instructions in making simple pieces, but that I know there is great danger in working over powder, and other inflammable articles, the use of which is indispensable, no matter how much care is used." (Volume VII, Number 5, November, 1857).
