232 pages : illustrations ; 22 cm. Summary:Here is a great Christian adventure--the story of a young couple who dedicated their lives to primitive African tribes, and who found romance, drama, and excitement such as few experience. Malcolm and Enid Forsberg were part of the tremendous events that in a few short years have taken Africa from abysmal darkness to the light of the twentieth century. Fresh from Wheaton College, Enid Miller and Malcolm Forsberg arrived in the LAND BEYOND THE NILE to prepare to be missionaries there and, after a year's study, to be married. They were under the Sudan Interior Mission, which John Gunther has called "one of the most celebrated institutions in Africa." Their first mission station was in Ethiopia. Later, they were in the Sudan, with a tribe so untouched by civilization that even their untutored neighbors called them "the people farthest back." The Uduks not only were frankly polygamous, drank hot beer, and held unspeakable ritualistic dances, but also practiced rites that included murder. The Forsbergs fled two wars, the Ethiopian War and World War II, but each time returned undaunted to their chosen work. They were eighteen months in the south Sudan before they made their first convert. Despite this, they persisted in their belief that "a vital change in the inner man could revolutionize the outer man." They translated God's Word into native languages, taught the people to read, led them away from the old superstitions, preached the Gospel indefatigably, and set an example of Christian living--all this while struggling to raise their four children, three of whom were born in Africa. For months on end, they were cut off from contact with mission headquarters by torrential rains that made the few roads a sea of mud and exiled them in the tall grass that grew higher than their heads. During one of these times, when a doctor could not get through to them, they nursed their first baby back from the edge of death. After more than twenty years in Africa, the Forsbergs can now see the results of missionary endeavor there: schools and hospitals, young couples founding a village where they could bring up their children away from the old pagan beliefs, and a high I.Q. for a tribe once regarded as too backward to help. Mr. Forsberg's moment of fulfillment came during a visit to his first mission station when he took part in a communion service led by his first convert. -Publisher.
