A study of the 18th century from what can be gleaned from the novels of the time: prisons, dress, morals, manners, parsons, Fleet marriages, the JP, the country Squire, gambling, duelling, drunkenness, swearing, highwaymen, masquerades, "pretty fellows" & "Maccaronies", clubs, Ranelagh & Vauxhall, women, coarseness, etc. The dangers of mistaking caricature & satire for truth. Critique of reliable sources : novelists, essayists, art of Hogarth. An analysis of the literature of the selected authors: Mrs Behn, Smollett, Fielding, Richardson, Goldsmith, Austen, Mackenzie, Miss burney, Miss Edgeworth, Mrs Manley, Mrs Heywood. HB, Very attractively bound: green cloth boards with blind stamped pattern and gilt pattern to front & back; similar to spine with gilt lettering.green cloth backstripe with gilt lettering to spine. Corners somewhat rubbed. 345 pages incl. index + 5 pages of Preface and 16 pages of Murray book adverts. Ex-owner name & address on blank page before title page. Black endpapers with sticker on last stating "Bound by Edmonds & Remnants, London". Some foxing (decreasing) from f.eps. to title page, and to b.eps and to last few pages of adverts. Scarce. Book is tight (but slightly tender, i.e. a little "creaky" on opening/closing), and clean.

    Full-Leather. Condition: Good. 1st Edition copy of History of the Captivity of Napoleon at St. Helena; From the Letters and Journals of the Late Lieut.-Gen. Sir Hudson Lowe, and Official Documents Not Before Made Public. 3 Volumes. Includes a fold-out map and portrait. Light tan binding, with marble-dyed edges of pages. Spine is a slightly darker color, with intricate engraved + gilt designs and 2 dark leather labels, one with the title, one with author + volume. End pages follow the same marbled design as page edges. Slight wear at the extremities, though nothing major. Front and back covers of the volumes have slight discoloration spots and scratches (see images). Front and back covers have a gilt border. Paper ownership label on inside of front cover.
