Born at Rapallo, near Genoa, Fortunio Liceti (1577-1657) was an Italian doctor, philosopher and scientist. Educated at the University of Bologna, where he received his doctorate in philosophy and medicine in 1600, Liceti held professorships in philosophy at Pisa beginning in 1605, at Padua in 1609, and at Bologna from 1637-1645. In 1645 Pisa offered him the chair as first professor of theoretical medicine, which he held until his death in 1657. Although an Aristotelian in his thinking for much of his career, Liceti carried on an avid correspondence with Galileo from 1610 to 1641, having met Galileo at Padua in 1609. 33 letters from Liceti to Galileo survive and 11 from Galileo to Liceti. Although Liceti published on a wide variety of subjects over his career, his major focus in biology concerned the issues of generation, reproduction and development. Beginning in 1602 Liceti published a series of works examining how the three parts of the soul (vegetative, sensitive and rational) come to be joined in the human fetus. The present work, De Vita, continues this investigation, which culminates in De Perfecta Constitutione Hominis Liber Unus (1616) with the counter-Aristotelian claim concerning embryogenesis that a male seed must be mated to a female seed to produce the vegetative soul in the fetus--a dramatic break from previous assumptions in embryology that the female simply served as an incubator to the male seed. Liceti's later works explored the inheritance of acquired characteristics, genetic abnormalities and interspecies hybrids. In De Monstruorum Causis (1616), Liceti was first to argue that fetal diseases contracted in utero could lead to malformation of offspring. Very scarce. A recent Worldcat search reveals on 11 complete copies of the 1606 or 1607 printings held by institutional libraries around the world.

Llight, sporadic foxing to leaves, boards worn, rounded and frayed at corners, outer hinges starting but in fact still strong, boards a bit smudged, stained but in fact near fine with striking copper engravings of mutations in humans, animals, and plants. Fortunio Liceti [1577-1657] was an Italian philosopher, physician, scholar and friend of Galileo. Interested in natural history and the work of mutations in nature and the human body, a field which was largely underlooked and under appreciated by both society and its medical practitioners, who were known only as 'monsters.' This classic work on Teratology shone a humanistic light into this area, which Luceti saw as something to be celebrated, rather than shunned, which made this a critical medical working towards the end of the Italian Renaissance. First printed in 1616 to wide acclaim, it was reprinted with lavish illustrations in 1634, and again here in 1665. He was among the first physicians to point to diseases and narrowing of the uterus being the cause of malformations. Liceti's influenced later physicians and scholars on birth defects, transforming malformations as a study of 'monsters' to a future study on teratology. (See Embryo Project Encyclopedia, Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani - Volume 65, and PhilArchive for entries on Liceti). Signed.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. 2 volumes bound as 1. 2 works by Liceti, De his, qui diu vivunt sine alimento, Patavii [i.e. Padua]: Apud Petrum Bertellium, 1612. + De spontaneo viventium ortu, Vicenza: Ex typographia Dominici Amadei, apud Franciscum Bolzetam, 1618. 1st editions. Folio; 31 x 21 cm. Collated: [68], 199. [1], 159 (i. e. 162) p. + [3], ff., 323, [30] p. Bound in contemporary calf, rebacked on later spine. Interally good. Fortunio Liceti (1577-1657) was an influential Genoese doctor and natural philosopher. A friend and correspondence of Galileo and a remarkable polymath, Liceti wrote widely on scientific subjects. Liceti is best known today for his 'De Monstris', a treatise on deformities. Liceti's De his is a collection of examples of long-term fasting. Liceti argued that longevity could be increased by fasting and provides a general treatise on nutrition. The second work, De spontaneo viventium ortu, "is a study of spontaneous generation, the Aristotelian doctrine that life (primarily insects) could be generated in the process of decomposition, though it discusses fungi and other forms of life that appear to originate spontaneously." Liceti surveyed a wide range of existing ideas related to spontaneous generation including an extensive analysis to Ficino's theory on abiogenesis. Liceti's discussion was widely diffused throughout Europe in the 17th century in the works of Daniel Sennert and Athanasius Kircher, who, himself, provoked intense debates on the subject. See Hirai, Medical Humanism and Natural Philosophy, pp. 123-15, 2011. Licenti was well represented in the library of Sir Thomas Browne, who studied in Padua during the time Liceti was professor of experimental medicine. Refs: National Library of Medicine. Brunet III 1069 for De His, qui diu vivunt.
