Original speckled full calf leather boards but professionally and subtlety rebacked in dark brown cloth with original leather spine laid on top. Heavily scuffed spine retains five raised bands with dark maroon title label in second compartment from head; strong losses to gilt stamped decoration in compartments and on bands; title label has surface chip causing slight loss to otherwise still reasonably bright gilt stamped lettering; small shelf sticker affixed near spine heel perhaps being a remnant from a personal or architectural firm's collection as there are no institutional/library markings within interior; rebacking cloth visible at spine ends and along joints where slender loss to original leather occurs. Leather boards scuffed with wear at edges particularly at corners; slender lengthwise horizontal surface scratch below front board center. Replacement marbled endpapers and flyleaves now toned and brittle with tears and chipping at margins; such faults indicate those leaves have been with book for a good while so re-backing no later than mid-twentieth century (unfortunately no bindery ticket present). Unknown bookseller's clipped catalog slip likely for this same copy affixed on third front flyleaf verso center opposite original contents page which features badge-shaped ownership blindstamp "Lloyd & Whitney Warren New York" at top right and brief pencil marks beside plate titles verifying their presence. Manhattan architect Whitney Warren (1864-1943) was a partner in the prominent architectural firm Warren and Wetmore with Charles Wetmore (1866-1941). Whitney's younger brother architect Lloyd Warren (1868-1922) founded the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York City. Total of 132 b/w plates with lettered pagination (four plates per letter all on rectos only) as A-I, K-T, V, X-Z, &, AA-II. Dull red colored top edge probably done at time of re-backing; original deckle cut fore-edges and bottom edges. Several small antiquarian dark ink stains at upper fore-edge with a few leaves/plates fractionally affected at margins; moderate foxing to AA-2 plate with other light foxing and some soiling occurring to others. Binding is firm. Aforementioned bookseller's slip summarizes this copy as "A most magnificent collection of 132 French furniture designs of the middle of the century, contemporary with the period of Chippendale, 80 of them by de la Fosse. This third collection of the French master's work appears to have been unknown to Guilmard and M. Hippolite Destailleur [Hippolyte Destailleur], the Paris authority, possessed but the first series and the supplementary second, with additions, both in small folio. Likewise, Lewine seems to have been unacquainted with the collection. The only record we can trace of a set which may have contained most of these plates is the sale at auction in France in 1895 of a collection of 128 plates, 80 of them by de la Fosse, realizing 2500 francs,-then about $500." Same bookseller slip cites book as circa 1775 and cites condition as sounder than it is now and makes no mention re-backing. OCLC does locate one copy at the Los Angeles Getty Research Institute, their copy undated too but likewise collating as [1], [132 plates] so evidently no formal title page by printer/publisher Daumont. The Getty's catalog description adds bibliographical reference "D. Guilmard, Les Maitres Ornemanistes (1880), p. 220-221" and further notes "following plates are by artists other than Delafosse: 4 each in suites M-Q, &, BB, DD, EE, GG, and II, and the last 2 plates in suite XX." OCLC locates only one copy of Volume II "IIe Volume de l'oeuvre de J.Ch. Delafosse" in Denmark. This folio volume has an approximate shipping weight of 10.5 pounds (4.76 kg) and will require additional postage and insurance above AbeBook's preset rate.…

Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. An exquisitely handsome suite of maps, all with contemporary hand-coloring, depicting military maneuvers, but the beauty of these maps transcends the original purpose. Eleven maps in all, they were removed from the book, where they had been bound in together as its final leaves, and backed with canvas, giving them more stability and allowing for their easy display as framed wall hangings, but here housed in the most unusual custom clamshell box created to also store the book proper. Folio. 32 by 24 cm. [10 -- half title, title, dedication, preface], 116, 60, [25] pp. With eleven maps now separate from the book. All but one these were originally folding, and these ten are 39.5 by 24 cm, with the tabs used to bind them in the book preserved and now backed with the same canvas as the rest of the maps, but not counted in our measurement. The non-folding map is 26 by 21 cm. The book itself has one hand-colored headpiece, on the first page of the dedication, and this is a large trophy or armorial vignette. The leaves of the book are of a heavy-ish linen , stock, and all edges of the leaves are deckled. The outer clamshell box measures 46.5 by 40 cm, and it is 6.5 cm thick. The book rests, or one could accurately say, nests, in a well created at its base, with substantial walls surrounding it. The maps are stored in a portfolio of sorts, with the same red cloth covering its exterior and the sides or walls between which the maps are placed, and a moire paper lines the map's well or depression. The map portfolio covers the book well as well, serving as a sort of interior lid. The book's leaves are generally clean, with minor light foxing and other insignificant staining. Contemporary pastedown of binding is sunned on spine to point of obscuring pattern. Scuffs and stains affecting the binding generally, but it remains still an attractive binding. Ownership bookplate on FEP has a Pre-Raphaelite style drawing. The maps are also mostly clean. The last map, the only non-folding map, has a narrow band of soiling along its lower margin, and one can find scattered marginal soil on this and the other maps' margins. The non-folding map has two coal-ish swirls on the map proper. We aren't sure whether these were intentional or later stains -- we tend to think the former, though. Quarter-page engraved vignettes at the head of each of the 30 biblical books; historiated initials; printed marginalia. Exquisitely bound in the 19th century in levant morocco extra over wooden boards, with mosaic compartments in crimson, ochre; and dark brown bordered in fine gilt line; spine with raised bands (lightly rubbed); pair of brass mounts, finished in black, with steel rivets at both covers (clasps and catched perished). All edges gilt and elaborately gauffered in textured floral motif; gilt inner dentelles; decorative endleaves (renewed) in orange and black; crimson silk ribbon marker. The work of a master binder. Expertly repaired at spine caps. Occasional faint embrowning; marginal dampstains beginning in second half (mostly at outer corners; expanding to fore-edge and darkening considerably in final 20 leaves). Overall a very good copy, with crisp text throughout, though incomplete: lacks Antoine Arnould's "Concorde des quatre Evangélistes," along with its accompanying Latin version and the concluding index. Amply margined copy of this sumptuous edition of the Bible, comprising the Latin Sixto-clementine Vulgate and the Port-Royal French translation printed in parallel columns. Isaac-Louis Lemaistre de Sacy (1613-1684) was the principal translator of the French version, which was edited and completed after his death by Pierre Thomas du Fossé (1634-1698) and Henri-Charles de Beaubrun (1655-1723), who also provide annotations throughout. According to Barbier, the French controversialist Thierry de Viaixnes (1659-1735), who found himself often at odds with his superiors, was the principal editor of the work; at the time of its preparation he was serving as director of an academy at Hautvilliers in the diocese of Rheims (McClintock & Strong). Dedicated to Johann Friederich Karg von Bebenburg (1648-1719), whose signed portrait was drawn and engraved by C. Gustav of Amling. An advocate of maximal papal power, Karg served as Privy Councilor of the Prince-Bishop of Bamberg and Würzburg, Peter Philipp von Dernbach, then of Elector Max Emanuel of Bavaria. He served as Dean of Our Lady in Munich, and was entrusted by Emperor Leopold I with a legation to Pope Innocence XI. By these efforts he secured in 1688 the election of Prince Joseph Clemens of Bavaria as Archbishop of Cologne, as a result of which he was made Chancellor and Minister of State (here noted on the frontispiece).
