Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A very good copy in the publisher's red cloth. The binding is generally clean, with only very minor edgewear and minimal bumping. The spine is faded and the gilt lettering dulled, but still legible. The contents are clean and bright with only a discreet owner's bookplate to the ffep. No inscriptions or other markings of any kind. The folding map to the rear of the book is in perfect condition. This volume is printed in both Afrikaans (left pages) and English (right pages). Edited by Leo Fouché.

Backstrip a little mottled, with light wear to head and tail; earlier owner's name signed on fly-leaf; folding map a little creased, and frayed to fore-edge; occasional fox spot. Good to very good condition. (Hosken, p. 75; SABIB 4, p. 460) "In contrast to earlier work of the same Dutch-Afrikaans nature, whose characteristics and pre-occupations were mainly Dutch, Tas's diary tends to reflect the atmosphere of his new country, and rigidity and stiffness have been reduced by a little of the South African sun. Tas often uses original, though sometimes rough, popular expressions. His criticism of social and religious authority is typical of the eighteenth-century effort to escape from restraint. What Tas wrote is important not only because it reflects the social and political conditions of an early Cape society, but because it reveals Tas's own personality and character. His diary makes him a gay and sociable person, and, especially, an organizer and leader. His dedicated ability was the real force that put W. Trigardt's diary was a valuable contribution to ethnology, linguistics, geography, weather patterns, and wildlife of the southern African interior. Tan cloth with blue spine title and pictorial on front board. Moderately edgeworn and rubbed with bumping to corners. Binding firm. Small library stamp on front endpaper, and previous owner's names inside front board and endpaper. "REF" written in red inside front board. No other markings. Contents clean and very good with color fold-out frontispiece illustration, black and white photographs, and five fold-out maps.
