Deuxième ouvrage de Hippolyte Foucque qui a été un des plus grands érudits réunionnais de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Agrégé de lettres classiques, il devient proviseur du prestigieux lycée Leconte-de-Lisle en 1930, puis chef de Service de l'instruction publique de la colonie, avant d'être nommé, à partir du 1er janvier 1948, inspecteur d'académie faisant fonction de vice-recteur du jeune département de La Réunion.
