Full leather, worn and scuffed; boards peeking through at corners; 8vo, 7 3/4" to 9 3/4" tall; foxing to endpapers and throughout; free front endpaper o frontis are torn at gutter; several pages with tears in fore edge; 2 plates with tears in bottom edge; 1 plate missing lower corner; last 2 pages of Index are missing bottom half; 597 pages.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Part I. Unprofessionally bound in leather. Spine applied crookedly. Corners and edges are greatly exposed from heavy use. Spine ends visibly turned up onto (or under) endpapers. Endpapers spotted and foxed, some old water damage. Pages extremely dirty and corners worn or torn. Yellow silk bookmark attached. Contents include principal martyrs from the Roman Empire, persecution of Christians in Persia, under Julian the apostate, by the Goths, by the Arian Vandals, from the 5th to 11th centuries, the persecutions of the Waldenses in France, ther persecution of the Albigenses, persecutions during the civil wars of France, and the Inquisition. Hardcover. Conditon: acceptable. 310 pages, 12mo.

Also includes from the commencement of Christianity to the latest periods of Pagan and Popish persecution to which is added, an account of the inquisition, the Bartholomew Massacre in France, the general persecution under Louis XIV. the Massacre in the Irish Rebellion, in the year 1641, and the recent persecutions of the protestants in the South of France. Leather cover shows overall wear, bare corners and splits in spine area. End papers missing. Previous owner name inside both back and front cover. Book need to be rebound. One section has threads re-sewed but broken. As expected pages are foxed and many edges tattered. A few pages loose and a few torn but nothing seems to be missing anywhere. 594p. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Each volume is bound in black textured full-leather with six gilt bands to the spine, and gilt decorated edges to both front and back boards. All edges and interior endpapers marbled. With thirty-three engraved plates - eleven in each volume. All plates present, as called for - some have a degree of foxing. Many other smaller engravings within the text. Edges of boards rubbed and worn especially at the edges of the spines - commensurate with age and handling over the last 180+ years. Corners of boards rubbed and worn. All pages tightly bound. Interior pages generally clean, but with some light foxing and browning throughout. Please note that there is some water staining affecting the last 100 pages or so of Vol. II - the text is still quite legible though. Each volume has an ownership bookplate 'Wilfred Sanderson' on the front pastedown. Original integral reading ribbons to each volume. Spines to all three volumes tight.
