First edition. Foxing to page edges. Very Good book in a Very Good dust jacket. Despite its title, ***The Tale That Wags the God*** is **not a novel**. It is a **posthumously published collection of literary criticism and essays by** James Blish, edited by Cy Chauvin and first published in **1987**. It is the third major collection of Blish's critical writing, following *The Issue at Hand* (1964) and *More Issues at Hand* (1970). ([Hachette Australia][1]) The book brings together essays on science fiction, fantasy, literature, music, and criticism. Its contents fall into several broad categories: * **The nature and purpose of science fiction. ** Blish argues that science fiction is more than entertainment-it is a modern form of myth-making capable of exploring philosophical, religious, and scientific ideas in ways other genres cannot. One of the central essays, from which the book takes its title, contends that in an increasingly secular age, science fiction fulfills cultural functions once served by religious myth. ([ERIC][2]) * **Literary criticism. ** Blish offers detailed analyses of writers such as Poul Anderson and James Branch Cabell, discussing their themes, techniques, and influence on speculative fiction. ([Apple][3]) * **History and theory of science fiction. ** Several essays examine how the genre developed and how it should be judged as literature rather than merely as popular entertainment. Blish frequently draws on historians and philosophers-including Oswald Spengler-to place science fiction in a broader cultural context. ([Apple][3]) * **Personal reflections. ** The collection includes the autobiographical essay **"A Science Fiction Coming of Age,"** in which Blish recounts his early reading, his development as a writer, and the emergence of American science fiction fandom. It also contains a substantial interview with Brian Aldiss discussing Blish's career and ideas. ([Apple][3]) The volume concludes with an extensive bibliography of Blish's works compiled by his widow, Judith Lawrence Blish, making it a valuable reference for readers and scholars interested in his career. ([Apple][4]) Overall, *The Tale That Wags the God* is best understood as a collection of thoughtful, often demanding essays about **how science fiction works, why it matters, and how it should be evaluated as literature**. It is aimed more at serious readers, writers, and critics than at casual fans, and it remains one of the more influential collections of science fiction criticism from the late twentieth century. ([Hachette Australia][1]).
