Trattasi dell'intera produzione tragica, generalmente d'argomento sacro, cristiano o biblico, di Pompeo Ulisse Ringhieri, monaco olivetano (che in religione mutò il nome di battesimo in Francesco, nato ad Imola nel 1721 ed ivi morto nel1787). Spirito "eretico" più d'ogni altro in quel secolo, "fu, tra i suoi contemporanei, il solo autore di tragedie che godesse d'una vera popolarità., (anche se) i ben pensanti, i buongustai devoti dell'aristocratico rigore dell'arte, lo chiamavano con cordiale disprezzo il tragico del volgo" (Bertana p. 268-9).
