Nel giro di un trentennio, tra il 1850 e il 1880 circa, la zona di Mosso, una località a venti chilometri da Biella, a ridosso delle montagne, conobbe una duplice profonda trasformazione. In un primo tempo la lavorazione domestica dei panni di lana…si concentrò negli opifici. In un secondo tempo i telai a mano vennero sostituiti dai telai meccanici. Franco Ramella ha ricostruito questo processo, analizzando fin dagli anni venti le trasformazioni e i conflitti sociali che l'accompagnarono. Questo libro - un vero e proprio capolavoro della microstoria - non è semplicemente un capitolo di storia della classe operaia, del movimento operaio o dell'industrializzazione italiana. Ponendo al centro della ricerca elementi di solito troppo trascurati, come la forza delle strutture comunitarie, il ruolo della terra come fonte di credito e di sussistenza, l'importanza dei piccoli produttori, Ramella ci offre un quadro che mette in discussione una serie di certezze o di luoghi comuni. Le lotte operaie sono inserite finalmente nelle strutture economiche, sociali, culturali che le resero possibili. Per questo, i protagonisti di questo libro sono, accanto alle vicende dei capi operai come Gioanni Sella detto il Bleu, dei crumiri come Giuseppe Torello, dei padroni e le loro mogli come Clementina Sella (cognata di Quintino), le peripezie conosciute da un piccolo podere, la Passera: ai tentativi, durati mezzo secolo, della famiglia Garbaccio Brut per rientrare in possesso della loro antica proprietà, Ramella dedica pagine non solo illuminanti ma narrativamente memorabili. Come osserva Giovanni Levi nella sua introduzione, la scelta di una scala circoscritta ha consentito a Ramella di dissociare elementi finora considerati come costituenti un tutto.
