Jeweils in Original-Ha…lbleder gebunden mit goldgeprägtem schmalen Einbandrücken mit 2 farbigen goldgeprägten Titelschildchen und marmorierten Einbanddeckeln sowie umlaufendem Farbschnitt, 8° ( 20,5 x 13 cm ). Die schönen Einbände sind berieben ( Einbanddeckel teils stark berieben ), Ecken und Kanten sind teils etwas bestoßen. Innen jeweils mit großem Wappen-Exlibris auf dem Vorsatzblatt *Auer von Herrenkirchen*, ( = bayerisches Adelsgeschlecht ). Seiten teils etwas gebräunt, teils etwas angestaubt, teils gering fleckig bzw. gering stockfleckig. Die montierten Exlibris stark gebräunt. Insgesamt recht guter Zustand dieser seltenen Ausgabe. Les belles reliures sont frottées ( Couverture en partie très frottée ), les coins et les bords sont en partie un peu abîmés. Intérieur avec grand ex-libris armorié sur la page de garde *Auer von Herrenkirchen*, ( = famille noble bavaroise ). Pages en partie un peu brunies, en partie un peu poussiéreuses, en partie légèrement tachées ou avec de légères taches. Les ex-libris montés sont fortement brunis. Illustrated work, as frontispiece to the first volume, with a portrait of Eugène-François Vidocq by Eugène Devéria. Manuscript signature of Eugène-François Vidocq below his portrait. Our copy is exceptionally enhanced with a precision and manuscript modifications on the title page: he added "de Paris" after his patronymic and embellished the title of the work with parentheses and lines underlining each printed sentence; the title on the half-title page is also underlined. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 4 volume set, 8 1/4 inches tall. First Edition. A splendid full calf of the period, an ancient catalogue slip attributes it to the great C. Lewis, with dense gilt tooling and olive labels on smooth backs. The arms of the 3rd Earl of Clare are gilt blocked onto the boards. Signed by Vidocq in the first… 3 volumes as called for. Eugene Vidocq was an adventurer and detective who helped create the 'secret police' in France and is considered the father of modern criminology. Dismissed in 1832 for a theft that he allegedly organised, Vidocq created a police agency 'Police de Sûreté", the prototype of modern detective agencies. Known all over France as a remarkably audacious man, Vidocq was a friend of such authors as Victor Hogo, Honoré de Balzac, Eugène Sue and Alexandre Dumas père and influenced Edgar Allen Poe. The figure of Vidocq is believed to have inspired Balzac's creation of the criminal genius Vautrin, one of the most vivid characters to appear in his novelistic series La Comédie Humaine. From the residual library of Charles Butler (1821-1910) of Warren Wood in Hatfield. The majority of his library was sold at Sotheby's on 5th April 1911. Each is bound in 1/4 uniform red leather with maroon and red marbled boards. Gold gilt spine lettering, and ruled lines. Volumes One to Three are signed by Vi…docq as called for. Engraved portrait of Vidocq as the frontispiece of Volume One. Vidocq is regarded by Haycraft/Queen as "The Grandfather Of The Detective Story." Vidocq rose from a life of crime to Chief of the Surete and innovator of many scientific procedures to catch criminals. Vidocq (1775-1857) had a tremendous influence on contemporary and later authors of the genre: "Poe, Hugo, Balzac, Dumas, Dickens, Collins, and Doyle. The fullest and most direct fictional expression of the Vidocq influence, however, occurred in the works of his compatriot, Emile Gaboriau (1833-1873)."- Murder For Pleasure p.29 -30. Bindings a little scuffed on the edges, but bright and unfaded. The contents complete with all half titles. Bookplate on the pastedown of all four volumes. An attractive near fine set with each volume housed in a matching cloth clamshell case with leather labels on the spine and titles stamped in gold gilt. A hugely popular character and a very influential story. Balzac?s character Vautrin is based on the convict-policeman. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
