Original 127 page mimeographed working draft script. Printed on yellow colored paper and bradbound in printed blue studio wrappers. This script was the former MGM vault copy and is many times stamped on the front cover by an enthusiastic member of the studio script department. The film was directed by Victor Fleming and stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke, Margaret Hamilton, Charley Grapewin, Clara Blandick, and the amazing Terry as Toto. The Wizard of Oz was released in 1939, HollywoodÕs ÒGolden YearÓ, when the world was moving ever closer to global war with Hitler invading Poland, the Great Depression at last lifting, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, halfway through his presidency, reaching new heights of popularity. These factors played a strong role in how audiences responded to this big-budget, big-star fantasy story of the power of belonging, connection, courage, and hope. Film critic and historian Roger Ebert included it in his canon of Great Movies, writing that ÒThe Wizard of Oz has a wonderful surface of comedy and music, special effects and excitement, but we still watch it six decades later because its underlying story penetrates straight to the deepest insecurities of childhood, stirs them and then releases them.Ó The Wizard of Oz is a close contender for the best-loved movie of all time, captivating generations of film lovers with its delightful story, peerless cast, and the poignancy of a young Judy Garland singing the unforgettable Over the Rainbow composed by Harold Arlen with lyrics by E.Y. ÒYipÓ Harburg. The film was nominated for 3 Oscars: Best Picture, Best Art Direction, and Best Effects, Special Effect and it won 2: Best Music, Original Score and Best Music, Original Song, Over the Rainbow. Very good. Enclosed in a custom cloth and marbled paper clamshell box.
