Hardcover. Condition: very good. Olive Hornbrook McFarland (illustrator). First Edition. Quarto with blue cloth boards and gilt spine title; 546p; bibliography; index; plates; explanation of plates; 31 cm. Studies of Opisthobranchiate Mollusks of the Pacific Coast of North America: Memoirs of the California Academy of Sciences, Volume VI. The author perished before completion of the book, and his wife (and the book's illustrator) Olive Hornbrook McFarland spent ten years editing and completing the manuscript. Frank McFarland was a Stanford professor of histology (microscopy and anatomy of cells) but also a member of the California Academy of Sciences and San Francisco Microscopical Society, and was collecting microscopic observations and classifications of his favorite animals, the molluscan subclass of Opisthobranchiata, the West Coast varieties of which he was attempting to identify as many as possible before his untimely death. This volume is an unusual mixture of science, grief and collaboration, with many beautiful nudibranch illustrations and detailed descriptions of mollusk anatomy. **Heavy and large; will incur extra shipping costs**. In very good (+) condition, clean and tight; corners are a tad bumped; very mild shelfwear to boards; prior owner ink stamp and embossing on front free endpaper; light foxing to lining papers; coffee stains on p. xii.
