Single sheet. Condition: Near Fine. Broadside, 9 x 12 in., printed in black and blue, the Franklin name in red, on cream Fabriano Capuleti paper from Italy. The text consists of the closing sentence from Franklin's essay "Apology for Printers" that he printed in his newspaper, The Pennsylvania Gazette, on June 10, 1730 defending the freedom to print. With five versions of the alphabet, plus the quotation, set in six different typefaces: Codex, Open Kapitalen, Fry's Ornamented, Smaragd, Romanée Titling, and Hadriano Stone Cut. Elegantly designed and executed, and beautifully printed, this broadside is one among 25 in the portfolio, "Orbis Typographicus," designed by Zapf, printed letterpress by Philip Metzger at his Crabgrass Press, and produced as a result of their 10-year collaboration. He was educated at Christ's Hospital, and King's College, Cambridge, reading English and Architecture and Fine Arts. He then worked as a designer with the London publisher John Murray, followed by two years in Paris with the Trianon Press. Back in London he worked for the Stellar Press and Ruari McLean Associates, as well as working freelance. In 1966 he married Penelope Kerr and moved back to Cambridge to join his father Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press. He became a partner in 1971 and took over the business in 1991, retiring in 2008.Alongside his work at the Rampant Lions Press, Sebastian Carter has written extensively on typographical and other subjects, beginning with editing the Christ's Hospital literary magazine The Outlook, and continuing with contributions to Granta at Cambridge. He has contributed to 25 out of the 29 numbers of the Whittington Press's journal Matrix so far, and in 2008 took over the European editorship of Parenthesis, the journal of the Fine Press Book Association, from Dennis Hall. Born on November 25, 1905, Raymond Gid became first known through his posters, after having studied at les Beaux-Arts. As a film enthusiast, he designed many movie posters, for example Vampyr de Dreyer (photomontage, 1932), Le Silence de la mer by Melville (1949), Les Diaboliques by Clouzot (1955). But a meeting with Guy Levis Mano (editions GLM), editor and typographer, soon directed Gid towards the book. In 1935, he publishes, together with the photographer Pierre Jahan Devot Christ de Perpignan and Chats, Chiens by Ylla. It is an intensive period of his life period: he meets Dufy, Corbusier, Hake, Lurcat and receives the gold medal for a poster at the International exhibition of Paris (1937). An important volume of the Charters and Laws of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia, printed by Benjamin Franklin, for which he billed the Assembly £261. The last complete edition of Pennsylvania laws had been printed in 1728 by Andrew Bradford, and the need for a corrected edition led to the appointment in 1739 of Kinsey, Speaker of the Assembly and Attorney General of the Province, to prepare a new edition. Kinsey completed a revised edition in 1741 and turned it over to Franklin, who required two years to complete the job. He finished presswork for the volume in the spring of 1743, the year after the date of imprint. Included are laws on slavery, roads, maritime issues, timber, blasphemy, witchcraft, debt, brandy and ales, Native Americans, and much more. This copy possibly from the library of William Jones (1760-1831), Pennsylvania politician, member of the American Philosophical Society, Secretary of the Navy during the War of 1812 and President of the second Bank of the United States. Jones was a frequent correspondent of Franklin, Jefferson, Monroe, Madison, Gallatin and others. His extensive papers are at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Eighteenth century Philadelphia directories, however, note multiple people with the name William Jones. One of the most extensive and important early Franklin imprints.
