Hardbound. Condition: Very Good. Reprint Edition. Description: Originally published in 1975, this reprint edition is part of the Time-Life World War II Classics series, The Secret War. Working through the Czechoslovak government in exile in London during World War II, General Frantisek Moravec oversaw the most efficient spy apparatus of all those in countries assaulted by Germany. During the decade prior to the German invasion in 1939, Moravec had built up Czechoslovak military intelligence from a ragtag group preoccupied with chronicling the latest affairs of Hapsburg monarchists into a talented, highly trained network of intelligence and counterintelligence agents. This is his fascinating memoir of his war years. A few hours before the Germans entered Prague, Moravec boarded a small plane with his ten best staff officers and flew through a raging snowstorm to England, taking with him two assets of incalculable value. The more dramatic of the two was continued contact with his prize agent, a rising star in the German military establishment who was destined for a place on the General Staff. Almost to the end of the war, this agent kept Moravec informed of German plans and activities, including the attacks on Poland, France, and the Soviet Union, and the development of the V-1 flying bombs. Less dramatic, but scarcely less important, Moravec carried with him to London access to millions of dollars that he had stashed in the West. This enabled the Czechoslovakian government in exile to maintain a relationship nearer to equality between host and ally than the many other exiled governments residing in Britain. BINDING/CONDITION: from a uniformly bound series: tan marbled boards with half black imitation leather (corners and spine), all edges gilt, ribbon place marker, Very Good condition. Printed endpapers. 8vo (8.5 inches tall). 240 pages.
