In 1864 Lincoln appointed him to the command of the Department and the Army of West Virginia. He was very actively involved during the battles of the Civil War and after the war he became the editor of the Baltimore "Wecker," then Republican candidate for secretary of State in New York and subsequently the Register of the City of New York. He then returned to editing a weekly paper. Matted with a signed card reading "F. Sigel, late Maj. Genl of [ ] New York, April 1891." Some spotting of portrait, light browning of matte.
