In 1864 Lincoln appointed him to the command of the Department and the Army of West Virginia. He was very actively involved during the battles of the Civil War and after the war he became the editor of the Baltimore "Wecker," then Republican candidate for secretary of State in New York and subsequently the Register of the City of New York. He then returned to editing a weekly paper. Matted with a signed card reading "F. Sigel, late Maj. Genl of [ ] New York, April 1891." Some spotting of portrait, light browning of matte.

Condition: Very Good. Signed note from 1890, "F. Sigel, late Mag. Gen. of Vols, New York, March 18th, 1890", with portrait of White, mounted in wooden frame. Franz Sigel (1824-1902) was a German-American Major General in the Union Army. He was popular with Abraham Lincoln for his ability to encourage German immigrants with anti-slavery beliefs to fight for the Union. Born in Germany, he fought in the 1848 revolution and commanded the militia during the siege of Freiburg in Baden. After the defeat of the revolutionaries by Prussia and reactionary forces, Sigel immigrated to the United States. He served in the 3rd Missouri Infantry and saw combat in the Battle of Carthage and Wilson's Creek. Later he commanded two divisions in the Army of the Southwest and fought at the Battle of Pea Ridge. He later served in the Shenandoah Valley and fought against Stonewall Jackson, in the Second Battle of Bull Run, at Harpers Ferry, and the Battle of New Market. Manuscripts & Paper Collectibles. [.]Anfang März 1848 begann nach der Februarrevolution in Frankreich die bürgerlich-liberale Märzrevolution in den Staaten des Deutschen Bundes zuerst im Großherzogtum Baden. Sie hatte die nationale Einigung der deutschen Fürstentümer und die Einrichtung liberaler, demokratischer Verfassungen zum Ziel. Franz Sigel, von der badischen Revolution erfasst, stellte 1848 zunächst ein Freikorps mit 500 Mann auf, nahm an der Offenburger Versammlung teil und beteiligte sich am letztlich erfolglosen Heckerzug. Nach dem Gefecht bei Günterstal und im darauffolgenden Sturm auf Freiburg lösten sich seine Truppen weitgehend auf. Während des Gefechts bei Dossenbach befand er sich noch im oberen Wiesental bei Todtnau.
