Hardcover. Condition: Good. This is the 1923 hardcover reprint of "Die Troerninnen - Nach Der Tragödie des Euripedes. The book ("The Trojans" in English) was published in Munich, Germany. To English readers Franz Werfel (1890 - 1945), an Austrian-Bohemian novelist, playwright, and poet, is mostly remembered for two novels, "The Song of Bernadette" and "The Forty Days of Musa Dagh". The first dealt with the life of St. Bernadette who had claimed to have 18 visions of the Virgin Mary. The latter shone a needed spotlight on the genocide of Armenians committed by the Ottoman government. Werfel and his wife barely escaped with their lives from the Nazis, who burned his books. The Werfels were able to find safe refuge in the United States. Presented here is Werfel's translation of Euripides tragedy, "The Trojans". This is the 1923 reprint issued by the original publisher, Kurt Wolff. It is a handsome book, bound with a white cloth spine and paper-covered boards. The type face used for the text is nicely large and easily read. It is in a modern font, rather than the old German Black-letter. This copy has a small, but unfortunate gouge near the top edge of the front cover. Black decorative bands and lettering on spine; black lettering and decorative border on front ; black decorative border on rear. CONDITION -- GOOD ONLY -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars and imperfections noted :: EXTERIOR : Weathering (or foxy spotting) along joints; spine displays brightly; fading to paper along top edge of front boards (about 1 3/4"); the same to rear board ( slightly less wide); surface rub to boards is moderate - there is a small, vague damp stain on the front board (we've marked this in one of our pictures). The most obvious imperfection is the presence of a small gouge on the bottom edge of the border at the top of the front board (we've also pointed this out in the same picture - hence the condition grade). The board edges display modest wear - the bottom edges display a minute amount of shelf rub. Else the exterior is clean. BINDING : Solid - tight. No leaves are detached or loose. The boards have taken on a slight curve or splay - This shows at the head of the spine also, which has slightly widened. INTERIOR : There is a penciled signature at the top of the front free end-paper, dated 1927. The signature is (to me) illegible. Placed inside the front cover was a business card - which we have left in place (shown in a picture) The card was that of Gertrud Kunstmann of Hamburg (Werkstatt Eleganter Damenhüte is printed under her name) She was a milliner - a women's hat maker. Published in Germany in 1923, this book managed to avoid the Nazi book-burning.
