Tom Rath is the common man heading to work in his gray flannel suit. His job is boring and the same every day. Tom was a WWII veteran who killed 17 of the enemy and had an affair with an Italian girl during the war. The central theme of this novel is the struggle of a man to adapt himself from the relative security of O.D. (olive drab) to the insecurity of gray flannel. Today many men wear the gray flannel suit and wonder whether this uniform provides as secure a life as the one they had when they were wearing O.D. (Olive Drab). A clean very presentable copy.

Wraps. Condition: Fine. Uncorrected Proof. xiv, 156 p. ; 21 cm. Softcover. Perfectbound; glossy wraps. Book Condition: Fine. A very sharp copy. "Desperate Measures" was first published in 1970 under the David Godine imprint, Though it met with favorable reviews, became the basis for the 1971 movie featuring Shirley Mclain, and was generally very highly regarded it ultimately fell out of print at some point (late 80's?). This is the Uncorrected Proof of W.W. Norton's 1999 reissue of "Desparate Characters" , a book that Jonathan Franzen called, "he greatest realist novel of the postwar era" and that David Foster Wallace called "A sustained work of prose so lucid and fine it seems less written than carved." Franzen contributes a new introduction. A scarce book to find as first edition and even more so in uncorrected proof form.
